SHIC

A subject classification for museum cataloguing

THE SHIC HOME PAGE

SHIC is a subject classification widely used by UK museums. It was created nearly 20 years ago by the SHIC Working Party which continues to develop it today. The first published edition appeared in 1983 and a revised second edition was published in 1993 with further updates in 1996.

The information which follows is provided by Stuart Holm, one of the founder members of the SHIC Working Party. This is the official SHIC web site presented with the full support of my colleagues on the SHIC Working Party.

Here you can read the introduction to the printed version of SHIC and then learn more about the way the classification works by trying out an experimental on-line demonstration version. This is incomplete but should give you a flavour of the real thing. There is also a news and information section where you can find out who created and maintains SHIC, how to get a printed copy, and all the latest news about future developments. You should bookmark the news section if you want to make return visits to this site to keep up to date with the activities of the Working Party.
