Social History and Industrial Classification

The SHIC Working Party

SHIC was created and continues to be developed by a Working Party composed of curators who actively use the system. The support of the institutions in which they are based has been crucial and is acknowledged with gratitude. All Working Party members have also contributed a great deal of their own personal time. The original team which created SHIC (with the institutions they worked for at the time - many of us have since moved on) included:
Rosemary Allan North of England Open Air Museum, Beamish
Peter Brears Leeds City Museum
David Fleming Leeds City Museum
David de Haan Ironbridge Gorge Museum
Stephen Harrison York Castle Museum
Stuart Holm Black Country Museum
Alison Roper Lucas Industries, Group Museum and Archive
Paul Smith Sheffield University, Centre for English Cultural Tradition and Language
Michael Vanns Ironbridge Gorge Museum
In addition, help was received from Chris Page (Manor Farm Museum, Cogges, Oxfordshire) and Catherine Wilson (Museum of Lincolnshire Life). There was also consultation with the Museum Documentation Association (MDA) to ensure compatibility with MDA systems.

SHIC is now maintained by a smaller sub-group although most of the original team retain an interest in the classification and actively contribute when appropriate. The current active Working Party comprises:
Judith Edgar Nottingham Museums
David de Haan Ironbridge Gorge Museum
Stuart Holm Freelance Consultant
Andy King Bristol Industrial Museum
Richard Light Freelance Consultant
Michael Vanns of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum was an active member of the current Working Party until 1996. Richard Light (freelance museum and SGML consultant) has just joined the Working Party to advise on matters relating to interchange formats, etc. The composition of the active group may change from time to time, according to the particular work in hand.

Publication of the First Edition of SHIC was funded by a partnership comprising members of the original Working Party with help in kind from the MDA. Since then, further support from the MDA has funded publication of the Second Edition and a totally revised index.
